John C. Winter | Birds Eye View | Wood inlay | 30×18
John Winter was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1950 and grew up in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He is a veteran of the U.S. Navy and has a 35-year career as a Design Engineer in the boat building industry. He met his wife Kathy in St. Petersburg, Florida and they have been together for the last 30 years. They have resided in Florida, Louisiana, Wisconsin, and Tennessee.
John began developing his wood working very early on, helping his father build a wooden boat in their back yard at the age of 8. He usually gains inspiration from the natural surroundings, finding it important to develop recognizable subjects and presenting them with a slightly different twist or unique angle. “I will start with a blank sheet of paper and draw a line. One line leads to another. Within a short period of time I am cutting wood and assembling something.” As of late, he has been exploring the idea of creating wall hangings using local wood species to expose images that are surprising even to him. People seem to enjoy these creations, and hopefully the inspiration will continue for a very long time.
